Make Aleph more responsive

Open siccovansas opened this issue 3 years ago • 2 comments

I understand that Aleph is most useful on a normal screen. But given that mobile traffic is ever increasing it would be great if several aspects of Aleph could be made more responsive. Some of the things I noticed/suggest:

  • Add a hamburger menu on small screens. Currently some of the links in the navigation bar are simply removed on small screens. E.g. on the homepage the links 'Datasets', 'About' and 'Sign in' are shown. But on a small screen 'About' it removed. And when you're logged in the 'Investigations' link is removed on small screens. A good solution would be to show a hamburger menu on small screens which contain all links.
  • When logged in, the navigation bar (e.g. on https://aleph.occrp.org/notifications) is too wide on a small screen (e.g. 360px width; which seems to be the minimum width to support). The profile in the navigation bar already functions like a menu. The 'Investigations' link is moved there when the screen becomes too small. If the 'Datasets' link is also moved to this menu then there should be enough space (and also show the 'About' link in the menu). Maybe the name of the logged in user can be hidden on small screens to save even more space.

Thanks for raising this issue @siccovansas. I would agree that this would be a nice to have feature for Aleph but the core team really do have capacity right now to address this. If it is something that you are passionate about, and if you have the tinme, and skill, we'd love to accept a pull request from you with these changes?

@Rosencrantz thanks for your reply! We have recently deployed Aleph at Open State Foundation (https://aleph.openstate.eu/; more about us at https://openstate.eu/en/) and might find some time to improve the responsiveness.
