Longer maps
having increassingly longer maps as the game progresses can make it more engaging :3 maps in the range of 40 to 90 seconds per lap (or sprint maps (as in point A to point B)? idk if that would fit the game) are usually good to be considered medium-sized? (idk)
with tips being, each map fitting a certain style, not only for aesthetics, but also for different ways of driving — some with tighter curves, some that gives you an advantage if you can exploit certain mechanics, etc. — while trying to keep a somewhat smooth way of introducing each mechanic along the map. the channel Gamemaker's Toolkit* has some good resources that are worth looking at if you want :3
* i would describe this video i linked as something like "i sneaked in a game design lesson in your Mario Maker tutorial", he does that sometimes lol
The only problem with this is maps takes a long time to build. I need to find the courage to build more :) I like the idea of sprint maps. It should be doable with the current engine. Will give it a try.
(Thanks for the video, really enjoyed it!)
The problem I see with longer maps, is that when you’ve done the break with your followers, you’re all alone on the road, and I find this a bit sad and repetitive (and you won’t be able to reach the last one); I’ve already this feeling with Tiny-sur-Mer (where I reach the last one with most cars). So for longer maps, I’d really prefer to have to use part of the circuit more than one time, even possibly in reversed direction, to have “more action”. Else, (some) maps could allow more than three laps, if what is wanted is long runs.
i guess that AI should have improvements too, then, and if it is judged as really necessary, a catch-up mechanic could be implemented, too
