For a mature hierarchical config it can become cumbersome to manage the all the nuances and keep track of where a config should be placed or what limitations some values are. A fail early and validation mechanisms are highly beneficial and could prevent malformed or unintended configs to be used further in the pipeline, potentially avoiding misconfigurations.
