Taskbar Does Not Work At All

Open SL6464 opened this issue 4 years ago • 16 comments

  1. Open SCT from the file you downloaded
  2. "Install" (auto-launch)
  3. Open SCT from your Start Menu.
  4. Click File -> Options (or press Alt+F and then O)
  5. Select SCT Taskbar (alpha) in Taskbar Type (This is still incorrectly branded as SCT Taskbar is in beta not alpha anymore)
  6. It'll ask you if you want to install SCT Taskbar, press Yes
  7. Click OK
  8. Press Enable

The above instructions were followed precisely on a clean installation of LTSB 2016. I've tried it with "Classic Taskbar" ticked and unticked and the result is the same.

Interesting. Let me make a version of SCT with a startup log, that way we can analyze where it breaks.

Hello! Have same (I guess) problem. Please share link with this special version of SCT - will make startup log too. FYI: before using (same way as in above instruction), I've made customization of original W10 taskbar (no unneeded icons, I make it thin etc) - maybe this can break SCT start some way?!

It's gonna take a bit, I'm currently very busy.

I've created the release All you have to do is open SCT and it will automatically download it After trying to run SCTT again a log file should've been created at C:\SCT\Taskbar\logs If that's not the case, there's something wrong with your .NET installations.

There's no logs folder:

Not sure what could be wrong with the .NET installations or how to fix that. I downloaded the thing that SCT prompted me to download before it would run (runtime 5.0 I believe).

I've also tried removing the program and reinstalling, and even tried doing it on a brand new VM that had never had SCT on it before. Same result.

Can you check the Event Viewer for any issues?

leetftw avatar Mar 16 '21 16:03 leetftw

By the way, it could also just be a problem with SCT. But I first want to eliminate any other possibilities.

leetftw avatar Mar 16 '21 16:03 leetftw

I've opened Event Viewer but have no idea what I'm actually looking for, or where to check. Where would this be listed?

SL6464 avatar Mar 16 '21 16:03 SL6464

Either an error or warning under "Windows Logs > System" or a message under "Windows Logs > Application"

leetftw avatar Mar 16 '21 16:03 leetftw

Under Windows Logs -> System, there are various errors and warnings that occurred since turning on the VM and autolaunching SCT however I can't see any reference to SCT/SCTT in them: https://i.imgur.com/uF8KJim.png

Under Windows Logs -> Application, there are four errors, two of which make reference to SCT/SCTT (the top two): https://i.imgur.com/vcj4pHr.png

The .NET Runtime error says this: https://i.imgur.com/LzqO8vT.png

The Application Error says this: https://i.imgur.com/cu195Fu.png

Let me know if you need to see any of the other errors or warnings.

The codebridge DLL is corrupt for some odd reason. Maybe manually download it and put it in C:\SCT\Taskbar?

leetftw avatar Mar 16 '21 17:03 leetftw

Had a quick look through the files on this Github page and couldn't see that DLL. Where is it located?

SL6464 avatar Mar 16 '21 17:03 SL6464

https://github.com/AEAEAEAE4343/SimpleClassicThemeTaskbar/releases Download the latest x64 version and copy the files in that to the directory

leetftw avatar Mar 16 '21 17:03 leetftw

Done, but this hasn't fixed anything. The taskbar still ends up the same as it did in my original screenshot (tried with Classic Taskbar ticked and unticked again, same result - can you actually confirm for me if this should be ticked or not?)

I'm getting the exact same errors in Event Viewer as before.

SL6464 avatar Mar 16 '21 17:03 SL6464

Classic Taskbar should be ticked. Do you have .NET 5.0 and VCRedist 2019 installed (both x64)?

leetftw avatar Mar 16 '21 17:03 leetftw

I didn't have VCRedist 2019 installed which seems to have fixed it and it's working now. This is truly amazing software and you should be proud. Thanks for taking the time to troubleshoot it with me.

One thing though (not sure if you've answered this elsewhere) - when I right click a taskbar item, it brings me to some icon selector. I was hoping there would be a standard context menu there (which is something you can achieve on 7+TT on normal taskbars).
