Web3 provider not found

If this chrome setting for metamask extension is not exactly like in the following image:

Then the page throws a Web3 provider not found error and does not open the popup. I'm not sure where the error comes from.

I'm only using metamask & wallet connect, and I expect the popup to contain just wallet connect if it can't access metamask?

It appears the issue only appears when the provider is cached, and then the setting is turned to something other than what the above image contains.

It's also reproducible on you test website: https://web3modal.com/

1. Open the website, connect your wallet with metamask (this should succeed provided you have the default metamask settings)
2. Go to chrome://extensions and turn the Allow this extension to read and change all your data on websites you visit: for metamask to onClick
3. Return to website, click on connect (in normal cases it would auto-connect, but in this one it does not), observe the weird console errors and nothing will happen on click
