Steam needs numbered font increase for accessibility
- Steam client version: 1721173382
- Distribution: openSuSE TW
- Opted into Steam client beta?: No
- Have you checked for system updates?: Yes
- GPU: Nvidia GTX 1070
- Monitor of 23'' 16:9 1920x1080
My eyes need more customable size Fonts for chat groups, discussions, news and Store.
I have the chat group parameters in settings with Big for font size, but it's not sufficient.
In Kwrite, I have Font Size in 24 and it's good for me. In Steam Chat, discussions, news and Store I turn blind.
The general setting for Plasma is not the solution because I only need this increased in Steam functions mentioned above.
Please, increase the accessibility to choose a custom size for fonts.
Best regards
Hello @Krovikan, you can use STEAM_FORCE_DESKTOPUI_SCALING=# or -forcedesktopscaling # when starting Steam to adjust Steam's overall scaling independently from your desktop environment's settings.
What I need to place instead of # ?
I don't know also how to use these parameters.

It's a number for how much scaling to apply, for example, you can completely close Steam, then run STEAM_FORCE_DESKTOPUI_SCALING=2.0 steam from a terminal to tell Steam it should run at 2x the default size.
I am testing. Tomorrow I post my results.
EDIT: I saw a problem. I need one or two days more.
I made all my tests.
Now, I need more resolution. Impossible without change the monitor (I can't).
Remember that my monitor is a 23'' 16:9 1920x1080.
I was trying your workaround. I tried STEAM_FORCE_DESKTOPUI_SCALING=2.0 /usr/bin/steam %U, and the same with 1.5, 1.35, and 1.3.
The best for all UI is 1.3 but for Chat Group and Friends Chat, the best is 1.5.
I am now at 1.5 but is a little big. Is good only for chats. The rest is better at 1.3.
Some posibility to apply scaling by modules? (i.e. one scaling for chats, etc) I really miss the 1.3 for UI but I want 1.5 for chats.
PROBLEM: I tried in 4 days to start Steam via shortcut in DE (Plasma) and via Konsole (2 days everyone). When I restart the computer, Steam forgot the environment property and is again in normal 1.0 (it checks a verify installation at start). I need exit Steam and start Steam again (this time don't do the verify installation) for apply well the environment.
Possible that the fault is %U? I don't know what do but was always set in command line of the shortcut of Plasma (I don't clear the %U because I don't know if Steam need it or not, and what to do the %U).
I used in Konsole (and in the shortcut) the command: STEAM_FORCE_DESKTOPUI_SCALING=1.5 steam %U
EDIT (20th August): Without %U do the same.
Another point of interest. When I open Screenshot Manager in Overlay, I can't see the screenshot (too little):
I was resizing it:
But when I close the Screenshot Manager, the next time that I open don't remember the size and position and is again this:
Panels as Achievements, Stats of the Game and Friends, keep the size and position.
Without resize the Screenshot Manager in the Overlay, the screenshot is too little to see if is that I want (and a lot of games don't allow alt+tab, or allow but lose the focus). And I need to do the operation of resize each time (I make a lot of screenshots). :(
Best regards
It would be nice if some sections were also adjustable. It occurs to me right now:
Can adjust the left panel as the arrow that I paint to be smaller and the next section with activity can be bigger.

I was trying and STEAM_FORCE_DESKTOPUI_SCALING=1.4 is the best for all.
But I need the feature that I mentioned in my above post with the red arrow to resize the list (left pane) and see the the center (activity) more wider. The right pane (review, badges, achievements) will be useful can resize too.
Oh, and the problem in Overlay with Screenshots Manager.
Regards
With Steam version 1726256783.
I see the changes to Screenshots Manager in Steam Overlay and is good. Now I can see well the screenshots. 👍
I see that the games pane is possible to adjust to the right (until half of the total size of the client), but not all I want to the right.
I am using STEAM_FORCE_DESKTOPUI_SCALING=1.4 but I need start Steam 2 times (the first always is at 1.0).
The best solution was a feature in Steam to Scale different panes of Steam (Library, Activity, Profile, Chats, Overlay, etc etc) to the needs of scale.
Best regards
I changed today to a 1440p monitor and now I can need to use STEAM_FORCE_DESKTOPUI_SCALING=2.0 at startup (2 startups of course). I used 2.0 to read well the chat groups.
Is necessary that Steam can manage resolutions from inside the client as flawess as one desktop (Plasma in my case).
