Steam/Guide button configurations not working with new beta updates
Your system information
- Steam client version:1717294964
- SteamOS version: 3.5.19
- Opted into Steam client beta?: Yes
- Opted into SteamOS beta?: No
- Have you checked for updates in Settings > System?: Yes
Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:
I use an external steam controller with the steam deck. Before the past week beta updates I was able to use steam chord functions like:
- steam+A to invoke the quick access menu;
- steam+X to invoke the virtual keyboard;
- steam+Y to turn off the controller
Now the above functions no longer work. Guess it is due to:
- Update the Steam/Guide button configurations for non-Deck gamepads to match the behavior on Deck, ex: Steam+X button to open the on-screen keyboard instead of Steam + Select, etc.
- Allow external gamepad controllers to load the same guide button configuration they would normally load on Desktop
Steps for reproducing this issue:
- Just use an external steam controller with the steam deck in gaming mode;
- Try the above mentioned button combos.
P.S. BTW is there any place suitable to report steam controller/input bugs. Since forever I have a bug where with some games the haptics/rumble function goes haywire in long gaming sessions (a few hours but the time is variable) The latest one is Ghosts of Tsushima where the controller haptics/rumbles goes erratic activating itself periodically and without reason. In this state the game rumble does not work according to the game's expected behavior. After closing the game (steam deck) the gaming mode UI is unresponsive to both the external steam controller and internal steam deck controller. After a forced steam controller turn off the UI starts responding to the steam deck own internal controller. This happens every time after a few hours.
And it went live in the new stable client:

Finally got it. Guide Button Cord Layout is not configurable on the steam deck which does not make any sense. Anyway used the controller on linux steam version and set the layout to default. That solved the issue. Guess that earlier behavior on steam deck simply override custom settings but since there is no option to configure it in steam deck, both gaming mode and desktop, I could not fix it.
This has been broken for me as well, starting with the same update a couple months ago. I tried editing/resetting the Chord Layout on another machine but cannot get the Turn Off Controller action to function on both the Deck or my other Linux computer, regardless of the hotkey it's assigned to. The magnifier also doesn't seem to work. Other hotkeys like opening the keyboard or opening the quick access menu work fine.
This not only affects SteamDeck/SteamOS, my system doesn't respond to Steam chord combinations.
No developer's comment on this issue? People are waiting this since 2022 if you google it. I can't change my chords layout and it's making Steam button unusable for me. It's really not comfortable to make a clip by Steam + Up button for example, and now I just cannot change it and can't have fun.
I can confirm this bug is still very much active, happening in both desktop and BPM, and on Windows to boot.
