Can't minimize to desktop with Win+D or ALT+TAB properly unless I use -nofbo or have other window opened beforehand

I'm on Windows 10. This is for Counter Strike. Exe version 1.1.2.7/Stdio (cstrike) Exe build: 16:07:20 Nov 29 2023 (9897)

Unless I use the parameter -nofbo, I'm unable to use the Windows Key + D combo to minimize to desktop, or even the ALT+TAB combo.

The only way to use it is having another program or window opened beforehand, then I'm able to ALT+TAB to it. Or use -nofbo in the parameters.

It wasn't like this before.

I don't think that's specific to CS? Same issue for me in Half-Life and Team Fortress Classic.

I cannot view the desktop with Win + D. The Taskbar shows-- it remains maximised: win d

I can switch between programs with Alt + Tab but again, the game remains in the way: alt tab

As you said -nofbo or Windowed mode sort of "solves" this. I didn't have this issue before the 25th Anniversary update.

I actually quite enjoy this feature - it's nice to be able to see TFC while working on another screen :)

This behavior is a bit strange though, it seems like the game is running in windowed mode (without the performance loss associated with enabling windowed mode) but doesn't behave like a window in terms of normal Windows operations (the game remains in front of any other windows selected, and can't be minimized).

Edit: just a clarification, it is possible to view another window from a different application on top of hl.exe, but as long as the game is running I can't force it to minimize to view my desktop on that monitor.

It isn't as though we can use Windowed mode either (at least not for me) because the FPS drops are huge.

Also, do you know those triangular black or warping anomalies (I don't know the term) you get at the edges of the screen with FoVs greater than default? They are far more apparent in Windowed mode and have a white noise look to them: hl 2024-04-14 17-26-24
