Gamescope 3.16.17 breaks HDR on Fedora 43 or Gnome 49

Is there an existing issue for this?

  • [x] I have searched the existing issues

Are you using any gamescope patches or a forked version of gamescope?

  • [x] The issue occurs on upstream gamescope without any modifications

Current Behavior

HDR Games in Gamescope works with version 3.16.15-1 in Fedora 43 Workstation (Gnome 49 -> HDR-Screen -> Steam -> launch Game in Gamescope with --hdr-enabled flag)

After the update to 3.16.17-2 HDR does not work anymore. After downgrading it works again.

Others on reddit reported the same. So I guess this is not related explicit to my system.

Steps To Reproduce

Launch any HDR Game from Steam with the command gamescope -w 3840 -h 2160 -W 3840 -H 2160 -b -f -r 120.0 --hdr-enabled --force-grab-cursor -- %command%

Same on OpenSUSE Tumbleweed / KDE Plasma 6.5.2 / GameScope 3.16.17-1.1

I was able to reproduce this as well (also on Fedora).

Downgrading fixed the issue:

sudo dnf downgrade gamescope
Packages altered:
  Action Package Reason Repository
  Downgrade gamescope-0:3.16.15-1.fc43.x86_64 User fedora
  Replaced gamescope-0:3.16.17-2.fc43.x86_64 User @System

After the downgrade to 3.16.15 HDR is working again.

HDR Broke for me after a recent system upgrade on arch, likely due to plasma 6.5, I have been unable to get it working with gamescope 3.16.15 either

same issue on fedora 43 kde, im downgrading gamescope for now to fix the issue

Not sure if this is the same issue, but I recently updated my machine last week and gamescope doesn't work with HDR any more. I get something about failed to create swapchain vk wsi layer.

I run gamescope as a separate display manager on a different virtual terminal from plasma.

It does work if I launch steam on plasma and set it as additional arguments to run gamescope.

I also just recently noticed an issue with it, but v3.16.17 was released all the way in September and I've definitely been on that version for a long time so something else must have changed but I'm not sure what?

This is a bug in Gnome, see https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/issues/4438

I have the same issue when trying to enable HDR via: gamescope -w 3840 -h 2160 -W 3840 -H 2160 -b -f -r 120.0 --hdr-enabled --force-grab-cursor -- %command% In KC Deliverance 2 and Cyberpunk HDR setting is disabled. It becomes active if I run it without gamescope in wayland (but then luminance is broken...). It might be Plasma issue tbh My setup

  • Bazzite Stable (checked 3 releases from last 2 weeks)
  • KDE Plasma 6.5.3
  • gamescope version ba147+ (gcc 15.2.1) (I think its bazzite build)

I am on CachyOS with KDE Plasma 6.5.3 and having the same issue. Downgrading Gamescope to 3.16.15 did not change it so I will assume it's not directly related to gamescope as others have suggested.

To anyone who has the problem on KDE Plasma: It seems to be a different issue than the one in Gnome as there was a change in Plasma which broke gamescope HDR. You need a version of gamescope with a patch commit to make it work again. To differentiate: The Plasma problem can't be fixed by downgrading gamescope, only by downgrading Plasma itself or by building gamescope from the main branch (which includes the fix to make it compatible again with the newest Plasma version).

See this issue for the problem of broken HDR with gamescope on KDE Plasma: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/gamescope/issues/2037
