Symptoms and Reproduction
Behavior when alt-tabbing back into the game puts the game into an unplayable state. So, generally the game seems to be playable, under the condition that the player never does an alt-tab.
The behavior breaks slightly differently in the two options it gives you for the screen resolution. Geneforge's launcher has a couple of options: Option A is to change the monitor's fullscreen resolution (looks likely to be 800x600) so t hat the game fills the screen. Option B is to leave the monitor resolution alone, so that the game shows up in a small sub-viewport in the middle of the monitor.
Under "Option A": alt-tabbing away from the game, and then back into the game, yields a black screen. There are still sound effects playing, and it sounds like the game is responding to my mouse clicks randomly clicking on legitimate UI or game elements.
Under "Option B": alt-tabbing away and then back, the game is visible in its little sub-viewport. But the colors are completely garbled and there's some kind of "double-vision" effect going on with these garbled colors. I'll attach a screenshot:
