Constant freezes and SSL error after a minute with Perforce plugin

Every time Unity goes out of focus, when it gets focused again, Unity freezes, all files get the "refreshing" arrows icons and after about a minute the following error gets printed into the console: Version Control: Status: SSL receive failed. read: Operation timed out: Operation timed out

We have asked Perforce support to help us with this problem and they were unable to.
