Support for mp3 chapter marks

Open jefro108 opened this issue 3 years ago • 3 comments

Feature request

  • It’d be perfect if the BookPlayer app supported mp3 chapters

Narrative

  • Some audiobooks seem to be produced as mp3s with chapters embedded in the ID3 tag. A few other audiobook apps support them but I much prefer the look of BookPlayer.

  • Information about mp3 chapters is at https://auphonic.com/blog/2013/07/03/chapter-marks-and-enhanced-podcasts/ including a downloadable example.

Design

  • Unlikely to be any design considerations as the interface would behave like an m4b with chapters.

Hi @jefro108 ! Just a little heads-up, BookPlayer should support mp3s with chapter metadata, so long as they also have included the id3 tag TOC (table of contents) I've tested with files that have been modified with Forecast and they do load the chapter list.

I do agree though that the chapters should be parsed regardless if the TOC exists or not, so if anyone wants to help on this issue, feel free to reach out to me to go over the things I've tested

It appears that the audiobook I loaded doesn’t have a TOC in the ID3 tag 😬 I didn’t actually test the file I pointed to in the link above - that does work fine in BookPlayer now I’ve tried it 😊

I tried importing my audiobook into Forecast (thanks for the link to it!) and found that the chapters were listed but not enabled to be included in the chapter list, so it looks like BookPlayer is doing its job and only showing the chapters that are in the chapter list.

In the Forecast info from the link you gave me it says

Even if structured chapters aren’t for you, if you’d like to show the listeners what you’re talking about at a certain time, you can also add special chapters that don’t display in the chapter list (in supported podcast players) — they simply show a link or image to the listener at a relevant time, for whatever duration you’d like.

It appears that my chapters were invisible because they hadn’t been explicitly declared in the chapter list - which appears to allow the feature mentioned in the quote above ie special chapters that don’t display in the chapter list?

So I checked the boxes and so enabled all the chapters to be added in the chapter list, saved a new version of the mp3 and now the chapters are showing in BookPlayer!
