How to import mp4 books via attachments or Airdrop

There are some publishers who are using MP4 as a format because it is very high quality and simple to produce.

On IOS, all MP4 files automatically go to Library which isn't accessible from Bookplayer. IOS refuses to allow any choices when Airdrop is used or an MP4 file is clicked on via an email.

This isn't a feature request to add importation from Library for an audio book (though that would be nice). AFAICT no other IOS audio book player has this feature either.

Perhaps there's a way for Bookplayer to register interest in MP4 files so that Airdrop gives the user a choice. That'd be nice too.

However, there's a simple work around, which I'm documenting here because Google utterly fails to find the workaround and I'm trying to help the next person that is having issues.

Just rename the file extension to m4b. That's it. Now IOS will give you the choice of app to open when clicking on the file in an email attachment or using Airdrop. The book will play just fine.

mmmmm we could actually do that, I mean register for mp4 files 🤔. Since we changed AVAudioPlayer for the generic AVPlayer, in theory, we shouldn't have any problems 🤔

M4A, M4B and MP4 are all the same container and are interchangeable as far as I know.
