Ping causes high cpu usage

Not sure how but it happened to me a few times: I ping a machine, stop the ping at some point and when looking on the CPU of Terminals it is using a lot of CPU. it only happens when I ping (maybe it starts when the host stops responding? as I said I am not sure)
