app needs to select play twice: play, pause, then select spotifyd, then play again

This is the android app and spotifyd-0.2.24 on nixos Whenever I want to start playback on spotifyd, it hangs while connecting. Instead, I have to start playback, pause it, select the spotifyd device, then press play again.

system log contains nothing (helpful):
