Add proxy server support

Open rex4539 opened this issue 7 years ago • 14 comments

As a user I want to be able to define a proxy server within the app so I can connect through it.

Example: I run the tor service on my computer and want to use 127:0.0.1:9050 to connect via tor.

Isn‘t this something to set in Network preferences?

Network preferences is system-wide.

The request is for app-specific proxy server support.

See how it is implemented in Telegram, Textual or even Firefox, for example.

Got it. My question, though, is why you want this as an app-specific thing? Why is it not something you set system-wide?

I’m not asking to be critical — it’s just that understanding why the feature is wanted helps me decide what to do.

The main reason is that proxy servers are slow by definition.

You are hopping through relays that provide many benefits (anonymity, censorship circumvention etc) but have the drawback of slow speed.

For example, I don't want my ISP to know which RSS feeds I'm reading but I want to have full internet speed while watching YouTube videos because they would never play in real time under a proxy server and would always stop to buffer.

So I enable the proxy in NetNewsWire but leave Safari running normal.

It will be great to have this feature. Proxy setting for app-specific is very useful in the countries which dont have free network environment, like feeds from feedburner are totally blocked in China.

@brentsimmons @vincode-io Any hope to implement this for 6.0?

Sorry, no. The features for 6.0 are done and we are trying to get them stabilised so that we can release it.

Perhaps the time has come to implement this?

@brentsimmons @vincode-io If support proxy, then the subscription can be updated normally in PAC Mode. Otherwise, I have to open the Global Mode of the agent at all times, which is not realistic. Thanks

Any progress on this?

We have not worked on this, and it’s not planned for the next release.

Any progress on this yet?

We haven’t worked on this — there are a number of priorities to ship before we’d consider working on this.
