[Bug]: Template Tools Should Match Movement Metric

Open dorpond opened this issue 7 months ago • 2 comments

Describe the Bug

I know the Template Tools were written way back in the early days, when there was strong support for D&D 3rd edition's 1-2-1 movement metric, but the Template Tools today really need to follow the movement metric specified in Prefs.

While some will argue how some should work with specific template shapes (cone), there are some templates that should be crazy simple to figure out while using grids, like the line templates and the circle templates.

To Reproduce

Open Maptool. Set Movement Metric in Prefs to 1-1-1. Pick any of the line or circle templates, and draw - they measure to the 1-2-1 metric, not the metrics set in Prefs.

Expected Behaviour

They should match whatever your movement metric is set for.

Maybe as an option B, have a checkbox Preference: 'Templates Tools will match Movement Metric', this way Maptool defaults will still work as people are used to them, but those who which to match Movement Metric can do so. shrug

By my calcs (which may be wrong mind you!) a circle template with a 1-1-1 movement metric would actually be a square and a manhatten/no diagonals movement metric would actually be a diamond? Is that what you would be expecting @dorpond?

If I could be honest, when I wrote this, it was when I was fed up with the line “spells” not measuring distance properly and hearing other GM’s new to MT complaining about it.

In 3rd edition they also did those line templates that drew that small box in the center of the two lines. It’s great that we support 3rd edition, but it’s time we really should at least draw a line template with proper distances and without that block in the center, if we so wanted.

I really didn’t put much thought into the others, but what you say is true I guess.

I think revisiting the cone template would be a great idea as well.

The end game is to have a fully robust template system, where GM’s and framework designers can create our own sets of templates, but until that time, I’d be happy with a functional line templates that measures distance correctly, and maybe even a cone template that is a little more flexible than what we currently have. In fact, I believe there was a verbal description of how cones should work in 3rd edition. I’ll have to see if there is anything out there that verbalizes the many templates out there to see what can be done visually.

If anyone have verbal descriptions of any spell templates for any game systems, maybe we should post them all here for reference.
