Investigate flexibility of Fischer-Tropsch and methanation

Open nworbmot opened this issue 7 years ago • 3 comments

Christian Breyer says methanation is flexible, Fischer-Tropsch has to run 24/7 (presumably because of some thermal process).

Can implement by setting p_min_pu = p_max_pu = 1.0 for Fischer-Tropsch units.

Note that with H2 salt caverns, FT runs 100% except in Jan/Feb anyway, since big H2 buffer allows us to save FT capital costs.

Process Ramping Must-run Source
Alkaline electrolyser ~minutes No DEA renewable fuels (2020)
methanol synthesis not really Yes, ~95% DEA renewable fuels (2020)
Fischer Tropsch synthesis no Yes,>~93% DEA renewable fuels (2020)
methanation not really Yes DEA renewable fuels (2020)
Haber-Bosch synthesis not at the moment (suggested possible with existing processes) Yes (shutdown/reduction suggested possible with existing processes Götz et al (2016)
LOHC (DBT) hydrogenation Probably < minutes No Niermann et al (2019)/Runge et al (2019)

As always new process designs are being suggested and developed but have (very) low TRL at the moment. Above properties can be understood for current prevailing or promising processes.
