another (maybe less calculating needed) route could be to be able to define at what height (measuring from the tip of the bit) the probe will measure the X and Y offset. Might need a warning if the measurement height is lower than the probe thickness, which can be ignored if stock is high enough.

This might also render measuring inconsistencys when you have only 1 or 2 flutes so you can measure on the shank.

Extra option when this is unavailable; allow a pause to manually rotate the bit between measuring X and Y
