exif data error when playing video

Open x8086 opened this issue 4 months ago • 11 comments

so you guys decided to add a bunch of features but not fix this crucial bug? it saves insane amounts of time if i can watch the video in the app itself and tag it.

care to give us more details on the bug?

Hi, Sorry I had spoken with a dev on this project back in march and he said you guys were aware of it. The bug is, for some videos due to being downloaded, does not have exif data or I assumed doesn't. The error message is "Error reading exif data." Then the video does not play. For many videos it does play and does not show that error message.

Also error message in developer view is Error: Warning: End of processing at large atom (LargeFileSupport not enabled) - [reacted file system - my edit] at T4.readDescription (renderer.bundle.js:2:4331915) at process.processTicksAndRejections (node:internal/process/task_queues:95:5)

You mean this issue? https://github.com/OneFolderApp/OneFolder/issues/110

Can you please provide as many details as possible around this error? Would you mind sharing a video so I can reproduce the error on my end?

I don't have the issue myself, so it's harder for me to fix it. The more details I have, the faster I can fix it.

Yea that one but I spoke(written back and forth on github) with someone from your dev group that told me about this app in a comment section of a competing app. I told him about this bug before I even opened that issue. Anyways, after I read that error message closely and in trying to gather more info for you, it dawned on me that it is probably a file size limit on whatever library you were using to play videos. It looks like anything over 4gb won't play and says exif data but it's not related to exif data.

" (LargeFileSupport not enabled)" this part of the error message seem to indicate you can set it to enable large files somehow.

Hey, i am having the same issue. I uploaded a video which caused this issue on Dropbox: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/wa5toll6mi6h5u8wqf5v7/dji_mimo_20250819_122024_0_1755593363054_video.mp4?rlkey=ikmf8jfaw43ovsvu9iot0flv3&st=7knspbai&dl=0

Some details:

  • Videos recorded on a dji action 4 and a Google Pixel phone all had this problem
  • Videos recorded on a Samsung phone worked fine
  • I am using the latest release (OneFolder-1.1.1.AppImage) on Linux Mint

Hope this helps!

I released 1.1.2 just now: https://github.com/OneFolderApp/OneFolder/releases/tag/v1.1.2

The problem is that I cannot have the error on my computer. It works fine, but I did see some warnings that I addressed. Thanks @Uspfe for the video.

It still failed to read the metadata, but now it should not break the entire experience... or at least I hope so. I want to get back to it in the future to fix it properly. This is mainly a patch.

Thanks so much! Unfortunately it's still the same: I can actually here the audio, but the video is black. (this was also the case in the version 1.1.1 - I just didnt notice because I didnt wear headphones).

I tried fooling around re-encoding the video stream to H.264 instead of the used HEVC/H.26 - this made the video play but I was not able to pinpoint the exact issue since re-encoding with ffmepg also changed some other parts of the file. Maybe this helps already. If I have time I might try again to pinpoint it

PRO MOVE. now finally this app is perfect. but can you please not have an update notification every boot up. At a certain point, this app is going to become less good than it is now and I generally like to use an old version when it peaked.

@Uspfe sad to hear, I will look further into it but it seems like a harder problem to solve

@x8086 did it solve the problem for you?

As for the updates, we know the popup is not ideal but it was actually hard to make it work so for now we haven't planned on touching that, but it looks like a ver cool feature

@x8086 did it solve the problem for you?

Yes it solved it for me. It was an extremely fast fix by you and you did an amazing job. This app is the only app on the internet that works the way I wanted a video gallery to work. I wanted one for so many years and it finally arrived. Now with this fix, it is perfect. Thank you. You're doing god's work[, son]. Btw, how did you fix it?

x8086 avatar Sep 22 '25 11:09 x8086

@x8086 many thanks for your words, it really helps the motivation going with this project.

The fix was mainly done by the A.I. It identified three weak spots on how videos were loaded and implemented better error handling.

This means that the feature is not fully functional. Some videos still have EXIF errors. It's just that now it doesn't block the file from being read.

You can look at what the AI did here: https://github.com/OneFolderApp/OneFolder/pull/128
