L4 Lead Cloud Engineer
This role is designed to bridge the gap between our Senior Cloud Engineers and the envisioned future for Cloud Engineering at Octopus, providing a balanced focus on technical expertise, leadership, reliability, and security. The Lead Cloud Engineer will take ownership of complex projects, lead them from idea to production, and mentor team members while incorporating principles of site reliability engineering and cloud security best practices.
Key Differences from the Cloud Architect Role
Scope and Focus: Unlike the Cloud Architect role, which focuses on high-level architectural decisions and long-term strategic planning (6-12 months horizon), the Lead Cloud Engineer operates on a shorter planning horizon (next cycle to 6 months) and focuses more on hands-on implementation and immediate project delivery.
Team Integration: The Lead Cloud Engineer is more embedded within the team, directly collaborating on technical direction and quality improvements, while a Cloud Architect typically coordinates across multiple teams and aligns broader strategic goals.
Mentoring and Growth: This role emphasises mentoring and guiding team members in both technical and security cloud practices, providing a stepping stone for Senior Engineers to develop leadership skills before transitioning to a more strategic architect position.
