I get the above fatal error on attempting to start Obsidian from ObsidianPortable.exe. However, if I start Obsidian.exe from <drive>\Apps\Obsidian\App\Obsidian\, it works.

I am using v1.8.10. Maybe I am missing some dll? I have already tried the sfc and the two dism commands to no avail. Thanks for your work.

@Numstr Hello! Yes, I'm using it on Windows 10. Since I am data-restricted, I tried downloading and running 'Otter browser' PortableApp, which gave me the same fatal error. I then disabled Mandatory ASLR as per your link and rebooted, after which ObsidianPortable.exe became functional again.

Having said that, I had initially downloaded v1.8.4 a few months ago which ran flawlessly with Mandatory ASLR set to ON. Mandatory ASLR has been ON forever on this machine. I even updated Obsidian internally from Settings all the way up to 1.8.9, when it stopped working. Do you know what changed? Thanks!

Maybe Windows updates brought something. Or possible that the Obsidian team made some changes You can: turn on again ASLR, download obsidian 1.8.4, unpack it and check. Because i cant reproduce this error for my self.

I checked with v1.8.4 and couldn't reproduce it either. You can go ahead and close this issue; I don't know what else we can do. Do you foresee any problems if I continue to start Obsidian from the 'internal' exe as I outlined in OP?

Thanks.
