I am afraid it breaks the ABI compatibility, so I am not in favor of this change until the ABI break is necessary.

Ok. Create PR for init Max[0] = Max[1] = Error; ?

Everything not breaking the ABI (i.e. the protected class) would be good to be in another PR.
