Feature Request: Configuration Export/Import

Open scienmind opened this issue 8 years ago • 10 comments

Useful for both backup/restore and for deploying on several devices, without the need of going through 10^10 clicks on each device.

Such backup/restore should include things like: root path, visual customization, and items' properties (custom titles, etc.)

Currently you can just copy the storage.js file from your profile. I tag to delayed because I need to make a lot of work on storage before I can provide this feature. But this Feature will be retaged when I can work on it...

Copying profile is messy and not a real solution

So, yes, maybe leave it open for now, and just keep it in mind during future refactors

Don't worry, I leave this issue open... Just delayed...

+1 for this. Manually backing up and restoring the storage.js file is a bit of a pain, and I was going to create a batch file to do it but then I saw the only things it actually stores are the background color and image and any folders. This leaves all the actual settings and the layout not backed up. A real export/import feature is a must for something like this that requires fairly extensive configuration, and I hope it's not too far on the back burner.

I agree, I love the idea, it looks good, and works really well. But it would be nice to be able to backup the settings so that they can be transferred to another system, or between system rebuilds. Love the work and look forward to future updates. ?Maybe a hashed output that can be copied and pasted into an import/export box would be a good interim solution, get the hash of all the code that generates all the Quick Dial information, and for import convert the hash back into the required information for QD with a note that Importing will overwrite any existing settings?

In the current version of Firefox 66, the settings for the add-ons from "browser-extension-data" are transferred to the storage ... "\ storage \ default \ https +++bla-bla-bla." The question of backing up and restoring settings has become particularly relevant.

+1 for this feature.

I had another corruption, and restoring the storage.js that I had backed up previously did not work.

In fact, I restored all Mozilla user folders (Windows 7 64 bit) I had copied from when all was working, but it did nothing which is surprising, so I guess the relevant files must be somewhere else?

I use MozBackup to backup and restore Firefox profiles, after a new install and across computers and across different Firefox profiles to and from different computers... and even older and newer versions of Firefox and between developer and user versions. try it... it is old but still works.

I have used Mozbackup before, but no luck. Besides, AFAICT it doesn't back up anything else than the profiles, which I do manually (both Mozilla folders in both local and roaming).

It's like the QD is somewhere else or there is something in the registry as it has no effect to restore either. (both backup and restore done with Firefox not running (checked in processes))

I am talking about these folders: C:\Users\MyUserName\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla
C:\Users\MyUserName\AppData\Local\Mozilla\

This is the second time I have tried to restore from (not too old) backups, so it's not like it's something wrong with the backup.

Any ideas?

+1 I second this request (to be able to import/export all the thumbnails and configuration).
