Anyone have luck accessing the built-in toolbar?

I need to add custom buttons to it and it seems like it is offering up nil values within, and nothing i can add seems impact the resultant toolbar. Any thoughts welcome..

for reference: seek out .NavigationToolbar and not .toolbar.
