StatusNotifierItem are things like gui deamons (email programs, chat programs etc) libnotify dosent work for me on d4 or vm so thats a bug then. (test with notify-send)
Desktop Notification support has been improved to support at least v1.0 so this works mostly now StatusNotifierItem needs https://github.com/maemo-leste/hildon-status-menu/pull/3 to be merged
