Phyunits: Design of binary prefixes

Open alexanderpann opened this issue 1 year ago • 0 comments

We now have the following units:

  • byte and bit
    • with binary scaling: kibibyte, mebibyte...
    • with metric scaling: kilobyte, megabyte...

The binary scaling prefix is according to IEC but there is also the notion of KB and kilobyte which is used in the JEDEC memory standards. I am wondering if it makes sense to differentiate between IEC and EDEC binary scaling und use the different prefixes for them (e.g. kibi vs K). IMO, kilobyte for the memory units is just too confusing.
