[BPASS] Binaries that will undergo common envelope
Hello! I find the hoki interface super useful and hope to use it for my research!
I was wondering if there is an column in the evolutionary track files for binaries, that indicates that this binary is about to undergo CE (through dynamically unstable mass transfer) or L2 overflow. Constraints would be for M1 and M2> 8 Msun, say, and over different metallicities.
Thereafter, I would like to calculate the rate of these events similar to the event rate of transients, and later see how SFH and galaxy mass will impact that.
Thank you!! Athira
Hey Athira,
A late response, but in case you're still interested in this: Something like that is available. You can tag each model yourself, but Heloise and I made this BPASS-EvE database to tag the past evolution of the systems in the pop. synth: Zenodo
hoki is able to read these tables as described in the EvE tutorial.
The SUMMARY table contains columns on whether a model underwent mass transfer (MT_bool) and whether it was a CE (CEE_bool) based on the BPASS definitions.
The CEE and MT tables inside the file contain detailed information on the mass transfer, the masses, duration, etc. I haven't looked at this in quite a while, so I'm a bit fuzzy on all the details.
The values in the EvE database are based on a specific population synthesis run from BPASS. So changing the IMF is more complicated. Reweighting models with the SFH should be possible, though! This is what I did for the BBH paper.
Happy to chat more, if you need/want more details or help (I track my email better: [email protected])
Hello!
Wow this email somehow got lost in the shuffle- and I may have earmarked it get to after the semester ended. And well, here we are- sorry for the late response!
I’ll be happy to chat more and get a taste for it- would you be open to a zoom call?
Thanks Athira
