E is defined as energy consumed by a software system for a functional unit of work. Examples around CPU, VM,, individual services are mostly comprehendible however the specifications need to call out that work needs to be planned to

  1. Do research on how to calculate embodied emissions for networking infrastructure
  2. Similarly to energy proportionality principles for CPU utilization, we need to come up with energy proportionality principles for networking infrastructure. Networks don't emit energy only for the GB of data flowing through them as pertained to the specific software. Also typically cloud backbones are shared by millions of software and services some of which are cloud provider owned itself.
