[Elite-II] SID question - FPGASID configuration

Open cdaters opened this issue 6 months ago • 0 comments

I am attempting to set up my FPGASID in the Elite II, and to my joy, the U64E2 detected it straight away with the note that I might want to check the settings. Now in the instruction manual for the FPGASID, it says once the board is in, you are pretty much golden!

  1. THEN press the FPGASID carefully into the socket.

In this state FPGASID already works as a SID replacement. To use the stereo mode, you have to connect the supplied cables.

And, this works swimmingly as shown using FPGASID's ConfiGuru utility, note that the address ($D400) is in green (...these settings can also be configured via the U64 menu.)

So then I decided it was time for "Stereo!" (lol) I then proceeded to configure the SID settings for all of that and knowing that I want the address to be offset for the "second SID" applied the settings as follows:

I then started playing around with some C64 demos. I downloaded a couple of demos: Wonderland XIV Donkey Kong

...though my mileage with both the video and sound varied greatly, I started wondering if I have my SID setup correctly (video issues aside...) So I revisited the instruction manual for the FPGASID and that got me wondering about the comment:

To use the stereo mode, you have to connect the supplied cables.

In the FB group, I noticed someone (Paul Beards) asking where to plug in a cable from his ARMSID setup, and that got me wondering if I needed to do the same thing with my FPGASID?

I figured that the U64E2 board would be smart enough to figure out the addressing via the menu settings, making the additional cable setup redundant or unnecessary.

Now I have not tried connecting that one cable to P9 just yet, I am still exploring the settings for the FPGASID itself. I do know that since configuring it for "stereo" mode, the ConfiGuru no longer even detects any addressing, and I have that No.24 instruction sounding off in my mind that these should be green...

  1. As a final test load the FPGASID configuration program ConfiGuru and go to the diagnostics page. Everything should be shown in green. Watch out for the SID2-Addressing because on wrong wiring it will show failures in red. Then check the beeping sound at both audio channels to assure that you can hear SID1 and SID2.

...not even when I try to set it back to "mono" mode can I get any of these addresses to show green. I have tried configuring it both through ConfiGuru and the U64 settings to no avail.

Regarding the video issues, do demos just not play nice with the Ultimate64 Elite II? I will have to test this on my Elite I, and possibly even get one of my OG C64s up and running to test/compare...
