Spotlight Softness doesn't seem to work

Open AlexanderThePilgrim opened this issue 4 years ago • 4 comments

Hi,

I noticed when trying to soften a spotlight that turning up the softness doesn't seem to do anything in RPR:

Softness = 0 image

Softness = 1 image

Compare this to Karma: Softness = 0: image

Softness = 1: image

Is there a different workflow to do this in RPR or am I missing something? Thanks in advance!

I can reproduce this issue with the Full quality, it works as expected in the Full (Legacy) quality.

But if I'm not mistaken, the Full quality implements spotlight differently, in a more physically-based way, and thus does not have such control. I'm pretty sure they will not fix it ever. Though I will verify this assumption. I will come back here when I have more info.

Not even some sort of falloff setting?

Also, I don't think the barn doors controls work either which I think should work in a physically based scenario right?

RPR's spotlight obviously was not designed with USD considerations.

Not even some sort of falloff setting?

I will check if it's possible to do something like this with the current implementation of the spotlight.

So if one wants a softer light in a physically based scenario, they would I guess just use a disk or sphere light instead of point to make a bigger light source (essentially diffusing the light) but then I am wondering how you would shape the light as it lights 180 degrees when spotlight is turned off, and when it is turned on, the edges are harsh no matter how big the light source is and the barn doors don't seem to work (at least at the moment). What would be the proposed workflow to diffuse the light with the new RPR?
