Bug Report:JAWS says "has details" constantly when image is inside a figure
We are delighted that JAWS announces "has details" on an image that contains the "aria-details" attribute. We also love that it announces entering and leaving the element that contains the details.
However, we discovered that when the image is wrapped in a figure element, when reading the text of the extended (long) description, Jaws says "has details" on each line or cell or any html construct. This is a terrible user experience.
In the DAISY Consortium, we are developing best practices for publishers and authors for providing extended (long) descriptions. The best practices use the HTML details element that follows the image, or a link to another file that contains the extended description. Our best practices recommend that the details or the link immediately follows the image, and if the link is followed, a back link to the exact location must be provided. This makes it certain that the user will not get lost.
We have our best practice recommendations that include an example that shows this behavior. Example #3 has the extended description wrapped in an HTML figure element. When you expand the details to show the text, you will hear "has details" all the time.

@GeorgeKerscher Hi, this is being worked on refer to short note on figure and figcaption
Is there any update on this? It is really infuriating, as pointed out in the "short note on..." article. It is also odd, to me, to announce a "caption" that has a name already as a totally different name ("details"). And, as George points out, sometimes images really do have details IE a long description which is more detailed than the alt text. That is a totally different thing than the caption and many figures that contain images will have both.

Are the words "has details" superfluous?.
Hello,
IMO having the aria-details pointing to the id of the figure caption is inappropriate use of the aria-details. We have developed a best practice for aria-details and can be found at:
https://daisy.github.io/transitiontoepub/best-practices/extended-desc/ExtendedDescriptionsBestPractices.html
https://daisy.github.io/transitiontoepub/best-practices/extended-desc/ExtendedDescriptionsBestPractices.html
Also, NVDA has a keystroke capslock+alt+d which takes you to the details element or to a link to an extended description. It also has capslock+shift+alt+d to take you back to the image that has the aria-details.
There examples of these techniques on the best practice site.
Best
George
