Feature description

A feature to save pictures from texts with multiple images attached. Pictures should be saved to a pictures/images folder just as there is an option for single pictures.

Why do you want this feature?

So that I can save pictures to my gallery outside of the messaging app. This makes it more convenient to share specific pictures without having to forward entire messages.

Is there a way to even save a single image without exporting it to Gallery?

@ma-gh Press longer on an image, tap three dots on the top and choose Save as.

@ma-gh Press longer on an image, tap three dots on the top and choose Save as.

I do not see a Save as menu option after I tap the three dots. Perhaps there is something else I need to configure to make that option appear?

I'm running "Messages" version 1.1.3 here (latest AFAICT, from 2 weeks ago). When I long-press on an image, and then tap the three dots, I see these four menu items:

  • Properties
  • Forward
  • Select text
  • Select all

@salewski If you only see these four items, then it probably displays save as an icon next to the three dots. Do you have it?

Thanks for the hint, @Aga-C ! I think I understand both the Fossify Messages app and the context for this GitHub issue better now.

I see different things depending on whether or not a given message contains a text portion in addition to a single image. I'll include screenshots and details for folks who might stumble onto this in the future.

If the message contains a single image and no text, then when I long-press on the message I see the floppy disk icon that you suggested I might see: Image

If the message contains a single image and also some text, then when I long-press on the message I do not see the floppy-disk icon, but I do see the three dots... Image ...and when I tap the three dots I see a Save as option in the pop-up menu: Image

I think I was getting confused because in my mind I was long-pressing to interact with just the image, but the effect of the long-press is to take into account the entire message when setting up the next action. That's probably just baggage I'm bringing from the app I used previously in which I never interacted with the message as a whole -- it was always manipulating "just the text" or "just a single image".

Also, as a user I'm just thinking that "I want to save this image", and it's a little counter-intuitive for the screen knobs for doing that to change based on whether or not there is a textual component to the message. As a software developer I get it, but as an end user it doesn't feel like I'm trying to do two different things in those scenarios.

For comparison, and in case it is useful as input for how to implement the feature being requested by the current issue, I'll note the behavior of the messaging app from which I recently migrated. In that app, long-pressing on a message pops up this menu: Image

It also has behavior for manipulating individual images that appear in the message, however: the user can tap a given image, and then that image will be viewed within the app. With that in-app view of the image, a Save icon appears at the bottom of the screen which allows the image to be saved to some pre-configured location: Image

If a given message contains multiple image files, the user has to tap on each one individually to save it. That might sound like it would be clunky, but it's actually not that bad in practice.

Version 1.1.5

Yesterday I received an SMS with a screenshot attached. I was able to save it, the icon of what looks like a floppy disk appeared and it was saved okay.

Today a friend sent 6 pictures in a text/MMS. Usually I can save the picture, but upon doing the long press, no icon or other method to save the picture.

Is this because they are different file types ? The screenshot was probably a .PNG and the 6 pictures were most like .JPG as they were taken with a Samsung phone.

This to me is more of a bug than a feature request. If you receive multiple photos in a single mms message, you can't save any of them, at all. Not all at once, nor even one at a time. The only way I've found as a workaround is to "share" each picture to an email, one at a time, and email them to myself. THEN, I can save them from my email app. If an mms message contains only a single photo, it can be saved perfectly fine.

This is EXACTLY the problem I had last night. My experience of trying to save the photos was frustrating and agonising.

PLEASE fix the BUG.
