Provide method for users to donate to Exiv2

Open postscript-dev opened this issue 3 years ago • 1 comments

Is your feature request related to a problem?

Provide an easy way for appreciative users to donate money to Exiv2.

Although Exiv2 is a background library and unlikely to attract many donations, anything that was given could help pay for the https://exiv2.org domain registration fees. This will help the project to be self sufficient in the long term.

Describe the solution you would like

There are two parts:

  1. An Exiv2 maintainer to setup a mechanism to collect donations (e.g., using GitHub Sponsor).
  2. Advertise the donation mechanism (e.g., on https://exiv2.org/, https://github.com/exiv2/exiv2/, etc).

I wish you every success with this.

I discussed funding in my book. When you think about the trillions spent on IT, it's odd that a unique part of the open source architecture totally relied on a single volunteer for years. I received a fair amount of abusive email for my trouble. I am very pleased to see the team grow and the project is now in good shape.

I discuss funding at the end of the introduction to Chapter 11 "Project Management" at "The Future of Open Source" It's discussed immediately before 11.1 C++ Code https://exiv2.org/book/index.html#11-1

Here are some ideas about funding and recognition.

1. GSoC give students a bounty. That program could be duplicated by Adobe, Facebook, Microsoft, Apple and other Tech Giants. 2. Large organizations could make donations to a foundation from which projects could apply for grants. 3. GitHub could carry ads and share the revenue with open source projects. 4. A federal program like Darpa. 5. Community recognition like the oscar or grammy awards.

When this is setup, I suggest that you make this known on the Exiv2 Facebook Page and on the forum at discuss.pixls.us. The URLs are in Checklist.txt in the team/website directory. Google knows about both of course.
