Non-instrument version of the 8ch Cardinal VST?

Open wyager opened this issue 8 months ago • 4 comments

Description

This is not an issue with Cardinal per se, but REAPER has this annoying thing that makes it effectively impossible to use VSTis (i.e. VSTs that advertise the Instrument subcategory) as FX units. See this thread for details - basically, REAPER forces a dry pass-thru for any Instrument VSTs. I have a ton of stuff I want to do with the 8ch Cardinal plugin as an FX unit (e.g. cross-modulating two stereo signals with an auxiliary output) that is currently impossible in REAPER.

Would it be possible to have a VSTi and VST version of the 8ch plugin, just like we have for the 2ch plugin?

Perhaps we can ask Justin to provide a config for such plugins. Cardinal is probably not the only one with this issue, right?

I feel similarly. I'm kind of confused that this evidently hasn't come up many times in the past.

Out of curiosity, is there any difference in the 2 channel VST/VSTi plugins, or just their subcategory? If the latter, what was the impetus for splitting them up?

Interesting comment from that thread:

Turns out that Cardinal in versions prior to v23.10 had the 8 channel version set to be an FX. It was changed in v23.10

There's a reason I've been using Cardinal FX ever since the change, and stuck around with 23.07 for when I need the additional channels.

It has been pointed out in that Reaper forums thread already, but I did notice that Surge XT does not force passthrough despite being a VST3i, so there must be a factor other than the VST type.
