Bourguignon and Ucko: dissociational states and trance

Open kirbykat opened this issue 8 years ago • 0 comments

From World Cultures issue 9#1 "HOW TO.TXT":

Also included on this disk are new data and codebook files (AT09.DAT and AT09.COD) that add two new variables to the Ethnographic Atlas database. These are previously unpublished data from Erika Bourguignon's late-1960s study of dissociational states and from Lenora Ucko's 1969 dissertation on possession trance. The sample of 1130 societies Bourguignon and her colleagues used in this study only partially overlaps (659 cases) the Ethnographic Atlas, and the entire sample is also included here as a separate database (BOUR.DAT). An extremely valuable part of this new database is the extensive bibliography for these 1130 societies, included here in six files (BOURGBIB.*). The bibliography is, unfortunately not formatted to be read by the MAPTAB program, but can be browsed and printed like any other DOS text file or imported into a word processing program. The hardcopy portion of the journal contains an article by Bourguignon and Ucko describing their dissociational states codes, and an excerpt from Ucko's dissertation describing her societal rigidity codes.
