Rework KHT wrapper

A while back Denis suggested reworking this in native python, and I said i'd take a look at it. I have been able to get the basics working but more testing is needed especially to confirm performance.

Another alternative is to make the kht_wrapper a standalone module installable from pypi. I'll see which works best.
