Readability improvements in splines

I generalize the issue here with a list of small things that should be improved in the implementation of splines for readability:

  • In the tests: vals1 and Sderiv_lhs1 are bad names for non-batched deriv.
  • Mirroring can be used in tests to simplify _cpu allocations.
  • _host better than _cpu
