Tabs of previous session not loading on relaunch post-update 6.5.0

What happened?

I have multiple tabs I keep open between sessions while using Waterfox. However, with this new update, the browser constantly opens to my homepage, rather than reopening my last session. Worse yet, is that even if I reopen them, they still don't appear after restarting the browser. I checked Options to ensure that the option to resume prior session is enabled on launch, and even tried going to through History to restore previous session. It didn't help. Restore Previous Session is blacked out and while the history section is recording those tabs, they don't stay open upon restarting the browser and simply starts the homepage. Pic included

Am I missing something? It's a minor inconvenience but still annoying.

Having the exact same issue. Also tried copying the profile from an earlier backup but that didn't work either. On top of the missing tabs, several settings seem to have been reset and I can't seem to get the Bookmarks toolbar to show.

Somewhat miffed because I had a lot of tabs open, so for me, it's a major loss.

This is just insane. Had to revert to the previous version and will refuse to update waterfox going forward until this is fixed. Guys you cannot just delete the previous user session like that without importing it into your fancy new system!! My tabs serve as todo list and reminder and can't just be snuffed out like that, I literally would not have been able to find those webpages again! 😤

For anyone else affected: Turn off auto updates, close Waterfox, reinstall the old version, visit your profile folder, go into the sessionstore-backups subfolder (which this update thankfully DOESN'T delete yet), copy the previous.jsonlz4 file up one level into your main profile folder and rename it to sessionstore.jsonlz4 to get your previous session back.

Can also confirm this bug and Kreevoz's advice.

Past workarounds have no effect on 6.5.0. Trying to restore by overwriting sessionstore.jsonlz4 or recovery.jsonlz4 (in sessionstore-backups folder) does not restore the session. Menu > History > Restore previous session shows, regardless of settings (normally it's hidden when you have the browser set to reload the previous session on start), but is always greyed out and can't be used.

Downgrading back to 6.0.20 - even an in-place downgrade - makes them work again.

March 2025 (Waterfox 6.5.4 Linux) and trying to switch to Waterfox from FF. I work in at least two windows with multiple tabs need them to reopen each time.

I lost all the open tabs and the "Reopen last closed window" option is greyed out.

(edit 1) I'm also sure it deleted my previous session's history despite having the setting to not do this. (edit 2) It's also removed session/login data for sites, again when I have the settings such that they don't delete them.

I'll look for a downgrade as @avatar-zero suggested and really hope it works, because I don't want to keep browser hopping :/

I do not remember this behaviour with previous versions, but it has now happened to me repeatedly after upgrading to 6.6.2 on Windows 10 64-bit. The setting to remember tabs was on, but after closing, on subsequent start, I only had my start page. All panels were lost, including the pinned ones. I also noticed that when closing Waterfox with multiple tabs open, there was no confirmation dialog with the ticks to close tabs and to restore them afterwards. I went to Privacy and Security settings, and in Clear history when Waterfox closes, which is on, I went to Settings, where several of the possibilities to clear were on (not sure, but I think it included Browsing & download history and Saved form info, which I certainly do not want forgotten). I disabled all but Temporary cached files and pages, and the restoring tabs feature seems to be working again, including the confirmation when closing. Perhaps the upgrade changed the default Privacy and Security settings, which in turn affects saving the panels (just a guess, not sure what my settings were exactly previously)?
