We append an asterisk to the label of required fields. The problem is that some fields are only relevant (and required) under certain conditions. For example, random seed is only needed if the config is using one of the randomized tie-breaker modes. Ideally we would remove the asterisk when the field is irrelevant.

Agree that this would be nice, but it would be a relatively heavy lift I think. IMO this isn't really necessary anyway, because we disable fields when they're not relevant, so a user should know they don't need to be concerned with them if they can't modify them.

I'd suggest we avoid taking action on this issue unless we get reports of real confusion from users, or at least time-box it so we don't pursue it if it seems like it'll take more than, e.g., a couple hours of work.
