Enhanced PDF Export with Full Support for Embedded Media and Images

Open conserve-cgn opened this issue 1 year ago • 2 comments

Describe the feature you'd like

Feature: The current PDF export functionality in BookStack works but lacks full support for embedded media and images. When users export pages or books containing inserted images or embedded content (such as Google Drive documents), these elements are missing in the generated PDF. I propose adding full support for:

  • Images: Ensure images are included in the PDF export so that the document is complete.

  • Embedded Media: Handle external media like Google Drive documents by either embedding them in the PDF or adding a placeholder that references the external content.

Describe the benefits this would bring to existing BookStack users

Benefits: This enhancement would significantly improve the usability and shareability of BookStack content:

- Improved Shareability: Users can share fully functional PDFs, including all images and embedded content, ensuring the exported documents are accurate and complete.

- Offline Documentation: Users needing offline access can rely on detailed PDFs, reducing the need to look up online media separately.

- Professional Appearance: Organizations using BookStack for formal documentation can export polished, high-quality PDFs that retain all the formatting, images, and media, providing a more professional output.

Can the goal of this request already be achieved via other means?

No: While there is an existing PDF export function, it does not currently support images or embedded media. There are no easy alternative solutions to achieve a complete PDF export with these elements intact.

We have the same issue. The observations we made:

  • If I put the image to the page from printscrin then the export to pdf is good, image is exported
  • If I put the image from books attachements, then the image is not exported

While I am aware pdf export is not the main goal for the bookstack and I do prefer html exports instead some external clients still require pdf for their operations.
