MQTT Apps don't show up anymore

Hallo! my first post here. since in this Git is no discussion tab I write this here as an issue.

I have been using 2 Ulanzi TC001 with Awtrix 0.98 for quite some time now and up until a few weeks or so everything worked fine. I use Home Assistant with Mosquitto and as I said everything worked fine. I haven't consciously changed anything in the configs of both HA and the 2 Awtrix devices.

The issue is that both devices stopped displaying the MQTT-based apps not simultaneously but one after another. all the MQTT messages are visible via the MQTT Explorer, so IMO it's highly unlikely that there is an issue on the Home Assistant end. I have set up user+password for Mosquitto in the config of Mosquitto and never have changed it. Rebooting the devices is to no avail, the only effect that randomly happens is that the devices go into the AP mode. But if they don't go into AP mode and come online via WiFi the web interfaces of both devices are available and appear to work as intended.

Besides that since I have multi SSID WiFi I changed one of the devices over to another SSID which is in the same IP adress range. It connected successfully, but that did not resolve the issue.

The logs of Mosquitto are filled with

2025-06-03 10:17:23: New connection from 172.30.32.2:57726 on port 1883.
2025-06-03 10:17:23: Client <unknown> closed its connection.

which is nowhere near the IP adress range of my local network, in neither of my network segments. I don't use the 172.x.x.x range at all. Besides that there is nothing else noteworthy in the Mosquitto logs. And also the Awtrix devices have their usual IP adresses in the correct adress range of my network which makes me think these log entries have nothing to do with the issue here. I rather think that is the connection between MQTT Explorer and Mosquitto using a virtual network within the VM host.

I tried to completely reboot my Home Assistant VM, also to no avail.

Has anyone else this issue? Or some advice how to solve this?

Thank you in advance!

a) are you able to create apps via the HTTP API? b) do all the correct packets get relayed from the device via MQTT when you change a value? eg, does the current app show correctly in HA? can you add indicators, enable transitions, progress to nezt/prev app from the buttons in HA?
