Organize Designathon II
There was a lot of enthusiasm about another Designathon in yesterday's community call. The Bolt.Fun crew is also on board with co-organizing, like we did for the first one. The general sentiment was that the format of the first event was great and that we don't need to re-invent the wheel. We can roughly pencil this in for late Fall.
Brief update from recent conversations in Discord. We're roughly aiming to organize a Designathon in February or March, as people are pretty swamped for the next weeks and months. Doing it early next years give us a bit more leeway.
I was looking at the website for the previous designation and it got me thinking about the ideas. What could some new ideas be in 2025?
Some ideas I have:
- ecash mint management design
- Nostr NIP-60 ecash wallet design
I'd like to propose that we do the Designathon from May 4 (Sunday) to May 18 (Sunday). Reasons:
- That's about 2.5 months away, giving us plenty of time to organize. Especially if we want to have a 4-week period before the event where people can submit ideas, signal their interest, and form teams.
- Two weeks are a good duration so people with jobs/family/etc to also get stuff done (first Designathon was also two weeks).
- Sunday to Sunday works better for people with jobs (most everyone I'd assume).
- Global Accessibility Awareness Day is May 15. We can merge our annual event for this with the Designathon.
- Oslo Freedom Forum is one week after (May 26-28), which I know a few people will attend. So no overlap there.
What do you think? You're welcome to propose other dates.
Also some other ideas for projects that have come up:
- Ecash design contest
- A self-custody guide for company/organization treasuries (Discord thread)
- Design UX for quantum-secure private keys (issue)
- Build a first version of the Bitcoin UI Gallery Sanya worked on for Summer of Bitcoin 2024 (recording) - this would require design & coding

I’m on board with this timeframe—I think it’s realistic and gives us enough time. I’m syncing with the ecash Brr devs to see if this schedule will work. While there’s a desire to get the ecash note design contest/bounty up sooner rather than later, I think we might want to consider waiting to ensure the content gets more visibility.
Four more project ideas:
- Ark: Prototyping user flows unique to this layer 2 (ASP selection, rounds, fees...)
- Using AI avatars & videos for bitcoin education Discord thread
- Personas for activist use cases (issue)
- Bitcoin.design website improvements (several old issues on this)
Saving Satoshi would like to participate again! Thanks for the project ideas Christoph, I've listed them here:
- Create a movie trailer and a poster
- Develop workshop and educator guides
- Organize daily gaming sessions
- Enhance the game ending so it leads users to the appropriate next steps in their bitcoin developer journey (that's something we need to explore more)
We started moving into action last week after our event planning call (next one is tomorrow).
There are explorations around the visual theme happening in the conferences channel in Discord, copy updates getting prepared and a new codebase for site as well.
I moved the site from the first Designathon to the new subdomain designathon-one.bitcoin.design. The repo for the new site for our second event is here, and it is deployed at event.bitcoin.design. It's just a stripped down version of the old site, with slightly adjusted text. Lots more to come there.

I moved the Designathon site to designathon-two.bitcoin.design, so we can re-use event.bitcoin.design for current events (meaning the Presidio Bitcoin Design Week).
