Rebase all open pull requests on recent `master` branch

This consolidates, rebases and superseeds #23, #31, #35, #36 and #37 into one pull request; it also adds the required documentation for #23.

As an addition, I've updated and fixed the build-matrix on TravisCI.

The project seems to be abandoned. Is there fork where those pull requests were applied?
