Scott Adams adventures and the Votrax Type-N-Talk
Is there support for Votrax speech in AppleWin? I've tried the Mockingboard version of Crowther and Woods's Adventure, which works just fine, but any attempt to run the Scott Adams games that support sound fail, with the game hanging forever.
I've tried with the images from https://archive.org/download/adventure-international-saga-1-adventureland-a2-v2.1-ph/software/ -
Boot from Side B. Press 1, Z to skip the open letter, flip to Side A, do not restore, then it asks for a slot for the sound board. Any input other than 0 crashes the game.
Is there support for Votrax speech in AppleWin?
Yes, but only the Votrax SC-01 on a Mockingboard card.
Votrax Type-N-Talk is an external box containing an SC-01 speech chip. (A page giving some details about Type-N-Talk: https://eden.mose.org.uk/Votrax/)
There's no support for this Votrax Type-N-Talk.
I guess I'll have to live without this feature I'd grow tired of within 10 seconds, then. 😆 Thanks!
This should be fairly straightforward to support via a command line option, so I'm reopening this issue.
Eg.
-sN -[no-]typentalk
And then if there's a SSC in slot-N, enable/disable a type-n-talk unit attached to the SSC. (Of course, the extra logic to support the type-n-talk would need adding to the emulated SSC card)
NB. No guarantees of anyone picking up this task or any release timeline.
It looks like MAME has a working driver for this device (votrtnt)
