Alternate key popup menu: size, visibility position and proximity
Hey Menny, thanks for all of your work.
tl;dr: Alternate key menu is too small and often covered by the user's finger. Move it above the keyboard ( where word suggestions appear), increase font size and translate cursor position above actual finger position whilst menu is open.
Blah, blah blah: ( my original, wordy message that allowed me to write the tl;dr) When long-pressing on a key and being presented with the little menu of alternate options, I think that it would be improved if:
- the text was larger to improve readability of symbols, which often only differ by a tiny diacritical mark that is hard to distinguish without very keen eyesight
- since the user's finger entirely covers the option being selected and surrounding alternative options, requiring inefficient swiping away and back again to check selection, I suggest the menu opens, full width, above the top edge of the keyboard and the cursor/ selection point is mapped upwards from the user's actual finger position so that you can control selection without covering the menu at all. I feel that this would be intuitive for all users on implementation.
- the distances from the current menu to cancel selection ( to drop the menu) are unnatural and awkward, please reduce the distance from the bottom edge as to leave the menu, particularly if starting from a bottom row key, moving downwards ( after uncovering menu options with finger!) closes the keyboard. ( This won't be an issue with the suggested, improved alternate key menu)
