To emulate a portal the board must have OTG support and a decently recent kernel. (4.x), A Pi Zero will work, but not any other Pi. For just communicating with a portal, any device with an usb port will work.

I am going to try and set up the toypademu so i will need to use my Linux pc then witch Linux os would u suggest I use? Most of my pc are running mint 18 but i plan to set up one just for this

toypademu only works on boards with an otg port, such as the Pi Zero. There are probably a few other small SBCs that would work, but a normal desktop PC will not.

@Meadowray If you're still interested, I developed a fully functional and user-friendly emulator using the node-ld library as a base: https://github.com/Berny23/LD-ToyPad-Emulator It also works on PC, without additional hardware.
