new update pulls up a pop-up which cant be exited
Which kind of popup is it? If it is the loading screen, it will close itself after it finishes loading. If it is the welcome window, you can close it with the ❌ button.
I can't close the welcome window for some reason. It might be fixable by reinstalling the add-on, but I just installed the other add-on named "Japanese support" instead of doing that, which worked fine, so I have no idea. If other people are people are having the same problem, please leave a comment.

That's really unexpected. The next version will include a close button though, maybe it will help.
Note: the welcome popup only appears for people who haven't imported the example mining deck. This is to ensure that all add-on's features that depend on the presence of the "Japanese sentences" note type work correctly.
