Midnight changes

Do you have any plans to update ABA for Midnight/12.0?

I suppose the tracking of buffs/debuffs in combat is gone (and will be sorely missed) but ABA could still track non-combat stuff, e.g. flasks, toys, or group buffs outside of combat. On the Beta, ABA still "works" for selfbuffs, it just runs into lots of errors when attempting to access secret values. I assume preventing trying to access these secret values would be the majority of the necessary changes (hopefully)

To be quite honest Midnight will most certainly be the end of ABA in my opinion. If tracking stuff out of combat fits your needs, feel free to fork the project and update it. If Blizzard changes their stance during the beta, I might take a look at it, but currently I don't have beta access and I don't feel like they will have a change of mind.

Thanks for all the years of hard work! This and adibags were my top addons to always use. Hoping they walk this change back. Adibuttonauras always made it so my eyes weren't bouncing all over the place and could handle multiple things at once.

@Ukhai thank you very much for the kind words, much appreciated!

@Adirelle thank you for creating AdiButtonAuras and its complimentary libraries and letting me manage it for all those years. I have learned a lot from it. Big bow!

This addon has been glorious! Thanks all for all the works put into this for all these years!

@Rainrider Thank you for managing it all those years. The fact that someone else wanted to maintain my code still amazes me to this day.

Out of curiosity, what Blizzard's stances makes ABA obsolete/impossible?

@Adirelle this. Generally all aura info is now secret (apart from auraInstanceID) most of the time.

I understand why aura info needs to be secret if you're looking to get rid of WeakAuras like functionality -- but it REALLY sucks for those of us who are used to tracking our dot timers on our action bars. I'm sure there are probably few enough of us that we can all fit in one room -- but this really kills midnight for me.

I've never liked the big bar of cooldowns floating in the middle of the screen and then having to match that up in my brain with the button to press. Much better to have it be on the button.

Thanks for your years of service! Of all the plugins I've used, this has been the longest running, most loved of them. Now that WoW is leaving me behind perhaps I should start to move on!

@aspiringnobody you speak from my heart! Midnight is the first expansion I haven't pre-ordered and I still have not made my mind up on whether to buy it or not.

However it is not all that grim. The default cooldown manager (CDM) will certainly get some updates, if not by Blizzard then by the community. Here are some examples:

  • CooldownManagerCentered
    • can display your action button keybinds on your essential and utility cooldowns (and they also track their corresponding auras by default)
    • can display the rotation helper hints on the CDM
  • Other Addons (i.e. BetterCooldownManager)
    • can add custom sections to the CDM for displaying cooldowns of items (but no corresponding buff tracking)

Generally this means you could hide your actions bars now and use the essential/utility cooldowns with CooldownManagerCentered to get some of the features of ABA. The biggest issue right now is the lack of trinkets and potions buffs, but maybe Blizz will add those in later.

It is somewhat strange why Blizzard added the CDM instead of doing it straight on the action buttons. I would have liked that better, but this is my personal preference.

Exactly! I've been looking into ways to move CDM buttons on top of the actionbars in a neat way, but it doesn't really work. On some specs, I can set up a "copy" of my main actionbars with the "Essential Cooldowns", which do show both cooldowns and aura durations (looks like a cooldown, though) but not every essential aura is covered. I've been meaning to write a forum post requesting this functionality to be available for actionbars, too - there is a rudimentary version of that, e.g. suggesting group buffs, but only while out of combat.
