Blockquotes encompassing multiple elements only apply markdown to first element

When trying to convert e.g. the following HTML to markdown,

    <p>Hello world!</p>
    <p>Goodbye, cruel world!</p>
</blockquote>

The blockquote markdown applies only to the first paragraph element:

>Hello world!

Goodbye, cruel world!
